Cañon City Church assembles new personal ministries team
It was a high day at the Cañon City Church! It was communion Sabbath. We were launching our new personal ministries team, and the most important part of the day was two of the personal ministries leaders who were being baptized!
I think I saw your eyebrows rise.
Let me back up a little and introduce you to two men who have been attending the Cañon City Church.
Bob Beck was raised a Seventh-day Adventist in Berrien Springs, Mich., and Loma Linda, Calif., but, when he turned 19, he turned away from the life his parents had laid out for him. Years went by, and he stayed away from any church affiliation. He might have been running away from God, but God was running after him.
He moved his family to Cañon City 13 years ago. Then three years ago, Bob felt God knocking on his heart, so he started looking for a church and found a nice non-denominational church that loved him back to Jesus. He even went to the manager where he worked to ask for Sunday’s off so he could attend church!
Bob loved to share his faith in his workplace (Walmart). Someone there said he should meet Ernest, a Seventh-day Adventist who also worked at Walmart. God was still working on Bob’s heart to bring him all the way back to his roots.
One day, Ernest happened to be in the break room at the same time as Bob. When Bob realized who he was, he said, “So you’re the guy who goes to church on Saturday!” As time went by, Ernest began to share literature with Bob. He started with a book that combined Steps to Christ with a question-and-answer format. They discussed Bible truths, and Ernest kept sharing more literature, books and DVDs. Ernest invited Bob to his house for Bible studies, and they went through Amazing Facts brochures and many other studies. Right now, they are marking their Bibles to be able to share truth from God’s Word.
Now to Ernest’s story:
He was raised in a home where he was taught another faith, but eight years ago Ernest started searching for God. He found Amazing Facts, and God brought Sandy into his life; she was a Seventh-day Adventist. As she shared her faith with Ernest, they fell in love and were married. They attended church together. When they moved to Cañon City six years ago, they came to the SDA church. They opened their home every Friday night to study with Bob and others.
Now Bob was ready to come back to church; so when Ernest invited him to come to church, he came. He and Ernest have a strong passion for studying the Bible and learning more of God’s truths, and sharing what they know with others. They live and breathe personal ministries, putting literature where people can find it. They both have a box in the trunk of their car and literature in their pockets, and are ready to give to anyone they might meet.
What a miracle! God brought two people together. Both had been searching, and when one found biblical truth he passed it on to someone else who was searching.
You know, that is the reason we all are alive; God is preserving us because there are people only we can reach.
Now you can see why Bob and Ernest have been chosen to be on the personal ministries team. They are living and breathing it, and I pray their stories will inspire each of us that we can find more people like Bob who are searching for the truth. —Cheryl Wilson, member, Cañon City Church
